Maldon: Crime on street no more with CCTV but Tesco could reignite trouble

A Maldon street which was plagued by vandals and drunken yobs has had a spectacular change of fortunes.
King Street, which has previously been blighted by a high number of crime and anti-social behaviour incidents, is now one of the nicest places to live in Maldon, say residents.
Vandals struck the street when 12 cars were deliberately and “visciously” scratched in one night.
But since CCTV cameras were installed at both ends of the street in 2010, the trouble has disappeared.
However, residents are now concerned plans for a new Tesco Express in nearby Wantz Road could reignite trouble.
A King Street neighbourhood watch spokesman said at a meeting between police and residents last week: “The mere presence of cameras in King Street with the police has reduced a lot of problems."
