Burnham: Boozed-up yobs run riot after carnival Burnham: Boozed-up yobs run riot after carnival

Burnham was transformed into a scene more reminiscent of a “West Ham v Millwall game” as more than 40 police officers stepped in to control alcohol-fuelled scuffles between rowdy youths.

The trouble erupted after Saturday’s highly successful Burnham Carnival procession.

Police seized hundreds of pounds worth of alcohol from underage youths who were provoking each other in the town.

I am not sure exactly what event Gareth Burton is covering here, but it was certainly not the Burnham-on-Crouch Carnival that I attended last Saturday with visitors from both Liverpool and Manchester. That was a showcase event that gave me pride in the place that I live in front of my guests.

This is SHABBY SHODDY reporting Gareth, of what should have been a good news story.

The carnival was a fantastic success and we have a double page spread with some great pictures of those taking part. The success of the carnival is most certainly not in question. The police have said problems happened afterwards, not during.

Then you should have put this fantastic success on the front page and hid this cheap sensationalist article inside.

Quite right Dengie Boy. Anyone seeing this inflammatory headline in the newsagents would assume the Carnival was a bloodbath. Six or seven thousand people visited and behaved well, a few teenagers acted stupidly afterwards yet which is given top billing?
Why on earth give this priority ?
Not only that, but reading the 'story'on the inside doesn't even back up Gareth Burton's assertions. Inspector Kilgallen makes it clear that any trouble was dealt with and prevented from escalating.
I am baffled as to why the paper printed this.

Gareth could come up with the same sort of story for any Friday or Saturday night but it just wouldn't be the same would it.

Is the rozzer breaking any environmental bye-laws by pouring the demon drink directly down the drain and polluting the waterway?

That should make a pretty good headline.

Interesting to see what the actual figures are for cautions and arrests on the night then you could make an objective view on the article. Either way if 40+ officers did have to be drafted in and a heavier police presence is required for future years then who pays for those costs?

This is absolutely disgraceful sensationalist reporting. Hundreds of people volunteer each year to make Burnham Carnival one of the largest and best in England. It raises many thousands of pounds for local causes and is enjoyed by tens of thousands od people, with very little trouble. There are always 40+ police on duty, most of whom are Special Constables, who do not cause us any expenditure, and who queue up each year to volunteer to work at the carnival because they enjoy it so much.
Why not spend your efforts on chasing down the retail outlets who provide the under-aged with the drink, and the irresponsible parents?
The M&B has really gone even further downhill in the last few years with your completely inflammatory front pages!
