A campaign group will be rallying its troops to oppose plans to turn a pub into a Tesco Express.

Tesco Stores has submitted its plans to build a single storey side/rear extension and install a new shop front at the Cups pub in Wantz Road, Maldon.

The supermarket giant has also applied for permission to create nine car parking spaces.

A public consultation period will last until October 18.

Bob Wyness, 64, of Mill Road, who is campaigning against the plans, believes they are “full of holes”.

He said: “They are providing parking for eight cars and one disabled bay but there is no provision for parking for staff.

“They will just block up all the local streets.”

He now intends to speak at a Maldon town council meeting next week.

He said: “The first step is to get the town council to say they think its wrong because they will get a say on it first."
