Asheldham: Animal lover in line for national acclaim
An animal lover who has devoted her life to caring for animals has been nominated for a national award.
Fiona Oakes, 42, looks after more than 400 animals, including dogs, horses, pigs, cats, chickens and ducks, at Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in Asheldham.
On top of that commitment, she also competes in marathons and other races in an attempt to raise money to keep the sanctuary going.
In April, she tackled the 154 mile Marathon Des Sables across the Sahara Desert.
Miss Oakes, who holds the course record in four different marathons, has now been nominated for a national newspaper’s annual inspirational women of the year competition.
Five finalists will be invited to attend a ceremony in London in November.
