Radiographers on a brand-new digital mobile unit today started screening women from Burnham-on-Crouch for breast cancer.
The unit – known as Crocus – has been temporarily located in the car park at the back of South Woodham Ferrers Clinic in Merchant Street.
Women from Burnham are being invited there to have a routine breast x-ray (mammogram) under the NHS Breast Screening Programme.
Normally, women from Burnham go to Maldon for screening but they are being invited to South Woodham Ferrers for a limited period to ensure they are seen within 36 months of their last mammogram.
A total of £814,000 has been invested in three new digital mobile screening units for the Chelmsford & Colchester NHS Breast Screening Service. The other two are known as Bluebell and Poppy.
Invitations for screening are being sent out approximately three weeks in advance of appointments and can be changed easily if the time or location is inconvenient.
Anne Pugh, Breast Screening Nurse with the Chelmsford and Colchester NHS Breast Screening Service, said: “Breast screening can help to find small changes before there are any other signs or symptoms, so we advise women to take up their invitation for a mammogram.”
