Maldon district: Pledge to support forces personnel

Councillors are putting pen to paper to pledge their support to armed forces personnel in the district.

At a Maldon District Council meeting, councillors agreed to sign an Essex Community Covenant.

By signing the Essex Community Covenant the district council will be helping to ensure that serving personnel and their families, as well as former personnel, will receive the recognition and support they deserve.

Funding will also be available to help communities undertake projects to promote greater understanding between the military and civilian populations.

District council chairman David Williams said: “The district council has championed previous initiatives to promote the work of the armed forces, in particular Armed Forces Day, which gives a focal point for members of the community to show their support.

“We are pleased to demonstrate our continuing support by signing the covenant.”

A formal signing ceremony is due to take place at County Hall on November 6 in the presence of senior representatives of the Armed Forces, representatives from forces’ charities and other civic dignitaries.

The Ministry of Defence has announced a fund of £30m for four financial years to help communities undertake projects.
