Some of the district’s finest historic buildings and landmarks were open to the public for free last weekend.

Organised by Maldon District Council as part of English Heritage’s annual Heritage Open Days, some 25 different properties were on show free of charge.

Among them was Maldon East Railway Station, which has become something of a forgotten survivor of Victorian railway heritage since its closure as the town’s main station in 1964.

Local historians Dr Patrick Lacey and Len Wilkinson gave people guided tours of the handsome neo-Jacobean style building, completed in 1848.
