An angry mum, who says her teenage daughter was driven to tears as a school uniform row intensified, has set up a Facebook group to battle the changes.

Maldon’s Plume School introduced new zero-tolerance enforcement of its uniform policy when pupils returned after the summer holiday last week.

The crackdown has seen a number of pupils sent home to rectify various infringements.

Michelle Stirton, 43, of Cherry Garden Road, Maldon, set up the Facebook group, Plume school uniform, after becoming frustrated with the the tough new stance.

“I understand about the make-up and the jewellery,” she said.

“I’m 100 per cent behind them with that, but this is getting ridiculous now.

“I think as long as they are in black trousers, the navy blazer and a white shirt, that should be fine."

Deputy head teacher, Nigel Brunt, insists the education of pupils is not at risk.

Local and national newspapers run similiar stories every September. Parents ignore the the policy and then embarass their children by complaining to the newspaper. Most organisations have a dress code, and results have shown that adoption of a strict uniform policy results in improved educational standards.
