Maldon: Recession puts retailers off £20million retail park
A £20m retail park which could deliver 150 new jobs is being held up by problems tying down companies to move in.
Aquila has wanted to redevelop the Brooks Brother timber yard on the Causeway, Maldon, since 2006, aiming to put a budget hotel, restaurant and several large retail units in its place.
The developer was forced to go back to the drawing board last year after Maldon District Council threw out the plans because of its“detrimental visual impact”, the design and location of the hotel and concerns about increased traffic.
Its revised proposals were given the green light in March.
But almost six months on and companies are yet to commit to occupying the retail units.
