Chaos and confusion erupted as children went back to school after the summer holidays.

Dozens of youngsters at Maldon’s Plume School feared they were stranded yesterday after bus fares were raised without warning.

The increased rate, from 50p for a single to £1, meant some pupils had no money to get home.

Parents reacted furiously to the price hike, branding it “completely out of order”.

A strict uniform crackdown at the school also meant some pupils were threatened to be sent home.
