Burnham: Town council joins residents in opposing housing plans Burnham: Town council joins residents in opposing housing plans

A council has told planners to go back to the drawing board on plans for a “ghetto” development of 450 homes.

More than 200 people crammed into Burnham’s St Mary’s Church, while dozens more gathered outside, as Burnham Town Council debated its response to Maldon District Council ’s Local Development Plan.

The plan, which will set out how and where the district is developed between 2014 and 2029, has earmarked land to the west of Burnham for 450 new homes, as well as potential sites in Maldon, Heybridge and North Fambridge.

The preferred options have caused a huge stir in Burnham and were criticised again at last Thursday’s meeting.

Vicky Hitcham, of Dunkirk Road, who is among those spearheading a Facebook campaign against the proposals, suggested the plan lacked “common sense”.

More like 550-650 people!

Elsewhere in the paper it was reported that there are 675 empty homes across the Maldon district. Given that the local plan is asking for 450 homes in Burnham and 900 in Heybridge, shouldn't thought be given to using what is already here and reducing the number of new homes required to 775?
