Burnham's sporting stars have raised concerns that their beloved community sports club could face closure.

Users of the Burnham-on-Crouch Sports Club, based at The Dengie Hundred Sports Centre on Station Road, are worried that the plans to build extra houses in Burnham could spell the end for their 50-year-old club.

Richard Mahoney, treasurer of the club for three years, said: “With the recent proposals for development at Burnham West and the CEFAS site we are gravely concerned that there may also be plans to build on our playing fields.

“They are planning to build to the right of us and to the left. Who’s to say they won’t build right on top of us? It’s a real threat.”

The club, which began life in 1962, is home to Burnham’s rugby, croquet and cricket teams, who all play on the Millfields playing fields in central Burnham.
