Dengie: Schools to lose out on thousands of pounds after funding shake-up

12:00pm Friday 11th May 2012

DENGIE schools will lose more than £85,000 after a countywide funding overhaul was finalised.

Essex County Council, the local education authority, says primary schools across the county have been overfunded for children with severe and complex needs, but underfunded for children with moderate learning difficulties.

To redress the imbalance, the funding formula for special educational needs (SEN) and additional educational needs (AEN) has now been changed for 2012/13.

There has also been a change to how small schools, which have traditionally received subsidies to cover their extra costs, are defined.

Dengie schools including Southminster Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School, in Burnham, are thought to be among the hardest hit in the Maldon district.

The county council has not confirmed final figures, but its initial estimates indicated that seven Dengie schools would miss out on a combined £85,240, although a minimum funding guarantee protects school budgets from changes of more than 1.5 per cent in any one year.
