Southminster Flower Show hailed a success

HORTICULTURAL fans came out in force to support the Southminster Flower Show.

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual event on Saturday to enjoy a number of floral displays in the marquees as well as horticultural items and crafts at the village's King George V playing field.

There were also plenty of arena events to keep the crowds entertained including, dancing displays, Bob Hogg with his sheep dog and ducks and a football match which saw children from Southminster Primary School going head to head with their dads.

Jane Cowell, chairman of the Dengie Hundred Horticultural Society and one of the show's organisers, said the day had gone “very well”.

She said: “Entries were up in all the marquees, it was a very good afternoon and we were very lucky with the weather.

“We have tried to make it more of a country show and I think we were lucky to have people's support, perhaps with the economic climate they're supporting things nearer to home.

“It's difficult to get volunteers for things like this but when people turn out to support you, it makes it all worthwhile.”

Mrs Cowell, who has been chairman of the society for three years, said money raised from the event has not been counted but once it has, a decision will be made at its AGM (annual general meeting) about how much will go to charity once costs of putting on the show have been covered.
