A PARISH has been refused a community grant because it is too rich already.

The Wickham Bishops Village Design Statement Association had asked for £350 towards printing and publishing costs for its village design statement.

But members of the community services committee for Maldon District Council decided that the cost should come from residents or the parish council as other parishes paid for their own statements and this could set a precedent.

Robert Long, deputy leader of Maldon District Council, said: “In a league table of parishes Wickham Bishops is in the Premier league. They [the parish council] did not increase their precept.

“It is a well off parish and they could raise £350 with two coffee mornings.”
