£16 million recycling contract awarded

A RECYCLING contract worth £16 million has been awarded to a company to run 11 recycling centres - including ones in Burnham and South Woodham Ferrers.

May Gurney was given the contract by Essex County Council and will now take control of the recycling facilities in Ferrers Road, South Woodham Ferrers and Springfield Road, Burnham.

The contract began on July 1 as the council tries to increase recycling rates.

The company already operate 43 other centres across the UK with more than 3 million people already using one of their centres.

Steve Longdon, support and risk director at May Gurney Environmental Services, said: “We are delighted to have won this important contract which builds upon our existing long-term relationship with Essex County Council. The management of recycling centres is an essential front-line service for local authorities and we look forward to delivering a first class service for communities in south Essex.”

Tracey Chapman, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for environment and waste said: “Essex County Council has pledged to increase recycling of waste to over 45 per cent in 2009, rising to over 50 per cent within the next three years, so it is imperative that we provide the very best recycling facilities for our residents. ”
