Jewellery was stolen after a crook distracted a home owner by saying they were a council worker.

The incident happened in Spital Road in Maldon on February 19 when the person gained entry to a home after saying they worked for the council.

They stole a jewellery box containing costume jewellery.

It is not known for which council the thief said he worked for.

A spokesman for Maldon District Council said it had not been informed of anyone trying to impersonate someone from the council.

Richard Holmes, Director of Customers & Community said “It is important that people take precautions to feel safe in their own home.

“Occasionally Maldon District Council staff may need to visit properties and residents in their homes, such visits will normally be by appointment.

“Additionally, all Council staff carry Council ID and residents can ask to see this before allowing them access.

“If you are concerned you can always call the Council, or relevant organisation, to confirm the individual’s identity. If you feel threatened or made to feel unsafe in your home call the police.”
