MALDON Film Club’s very successful season continues with the screening of Embrace of the Serpent this Wednesday.

The film won the Art Cinema award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and is inspired by the real-life journals of two European explorers in search of a rare flower said to have healing properties.

Both are guided through river and jungle by the same native shaman Karamakate who is the last surviving member of his tribe.

Directed by Ciro Guerra the film is described as a “breathtaking cinematic odyssey through the Amazon”

The second film to be shown in March, Mr Holmes stars Ian Mckellen, Laura Linney and Milo Parker.

Based on a novel, this “true story” tells what happens when the world’s most famous detective is retired and living in seclusion in Sussex.

Ian McKellen plays an ageing Mr Holmes (described as brilliant throughout) and his piercing blue eyes reveal both the gallantry of youth and the sadness of a life’s worth of memories slipping further away.

Maldon Film Club meets at Maldon Town Hall every other week, with doors opening at 7.15pm.

Wine and soft drinks are available, at a charge, from 7.30pm and all films begin at 8pm. From now until the end of the season films will be screened on a Wednesday. Before Christmas each year, films are screened on Tuesdays.
