A TENNIS loving grandma has celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.

Irene Lunn turned 100 on Monday and celebrated reaching the landmark with four generations of her family at the The Bull restaurant in Great Totham last weekend.

She followed the restaurant trip up with a low-key party with friends at her sheltered home on High Street, Maldon.

The former newsagent worker, who made lightbulbs during the war, was born in Ilford but has lived in Maldon for the past 14 years.

And despite her age, her grandson, Richard Lunn, said his grandmother is still going strong.

He said: “She lives at Baker Mews and she’s perfectly capable of living independently.

“She does have a walking frame now though so in the past six months she’s had to stop taking her walks up and down the high street.”

The centenarian enjoys spending her free time watching tennis on TV and according to her grandson she has her favourites.

Richard said: “She’s a big fan of Andy Murray and Roger Federer but she can’t seem to stand Rafael Nadal.”

As part of the celebration, Mrs Lunn received a visit from the deputy mayor Abdul Hafiz and a telegram from the Queen.

Of the telegram, Richard said: “It’s in a frame and it’s been given pride of place.”
