Giant poppies are lining the main route through a village as an act of Remembrance.

The artificial red flowers have been placed on village signs and telegraph poles in Asheldham in the lead up to Armistice Day this weekend.

The idea was masterminded by Colin Cooper, chairman of the village residents’ group, who came across a similar scheme elsewhere in the country.

Mr Cooper said: “Last year I went to visit one of my sisters in Surrey and as I was driving along the A25 I notice several villages on that road had all these large poppies attached to telegraph poles and other street furniture. It looked really effective.

“I contacted the Royal British Legion when I got home but it was too late for last year.”

Mr Cooper resurrected the idea this year and the giant poppies were installed along the main road through Ashledham last week.

“They are much larger than ones you would put in your button hole or anything like that,” he said.

“They are about plate size – they are really quite large.

“You make a donation and they send them out to you.

“We put them up last weekend with some of the other members.”

The poppies have already got a good reaction from residents and visitors.

Mr Cooper added: “I think it reminds people about how the servicemen and women sacrificed themselves.”
