A COMMUNITY is in shock after a man in his sixties was viciously assaulted at a train station.

Transport police and ambulance services were called to Burnham Railway Station on Friday night with reports a 68-year-old man had been beaten over the head in an assault.

Crews attended to treat the man who was drifting in and out of consciousness.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Burnham-on-Crouch on Friday, March 24 following reports of an assault at Burnham train station.

“The call came into police at 6.47pm. Officers attended alongside paramedics.

“A 68-year-old man was taken to hospital in need of treatment to the injuries that he sustained.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We despatched an ambulance to Station House in Burnham-on-Crouch after the call came in around 6.30pm on Friday.

“The patient, a 68-year-old male, had suffered a head injury, and was drifting in and out of consciousness.

“He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Broomfield Hospital in a stable condition for further treatment.”

Nearby residents were shocked to hear of the assault.

Emma Jenkins, of Falklands Road, said: “That is awful to hear. I hadn’t heard about any of it beforehand.

“It’s very worrying. It’s not like it was pitch black or anything, people are still around at this point in the day and yet they still feel they have the right to do something like that.

"It’s awful.”

British Transport Police are appealing for information on the assault.
