THE proposal to erect a 21-metre mast in the Riverside Park at Burnham is, in my view, an excellent indeed.
This would serve as a focal point from afar, and most appropriate to the towns long nautical association.
Anyone interested in vexillology, as I am, will no doubt see the potential, i.e. the Queen’s Birthday, Burnham Week, Carnival week, visiting dignitaries from overseas etc.
When I last visited the east coast of Spain, I was impressed by a similar imposing mast at, I believe, Benalmadena.
Congratulations to whoever mooted the idea.
I gather there has also been a suggestion for a Martian sculpture because of the association with the acclaimed War of the Worlds sci-fi.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Surely we already have these extra-terrestrial like creations appearing across our coastline. We politely call them Wind Farms.
In conclusion and just a thought, perhaps following the recent political war of words, over the Brexit and the issue of a second Scottish referendum etc, might it not be apt for a Martian sculpture to be installed in the grounds of the official residence of Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon?
