URGENT changes need to be made at the Burnham bends following a spate of serious crashes, it has been claimed.

Crews from the East of England Ambulance Service were called to the town to treat patients following three separate incidents on the bends in just two days.

On Friday night ambulance crews treated two people following a crash on Southminster Road.

A two car crash on Lower Burnham Road earlier that day caused huge disruption during the morning rush hour and saw three people treated for injuries.

An ambulance service spokesman added: “Crews treated one patient who was suffering from chest injuries, and two others at the scene.”

A man in his 20s was hospitalised after a car crashed into a ditch on Maldon Road, near Althorne, on Thursday.

Burnham town councillor, Wendy Stamp now thinks enough is enough, and wants to see changes made.

She said: “Something needs to be done about these roads because they are proving to be dangerous. There have been three or four incidents over the last week so of course something has to change.

“I have been in contact with the authorities about this with the help of Ken Harris and the Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP team).

“We are hoping to organise a meeting with these people to see what can be done. Something has to change, sooner rather than later.”

An Essex Highways spokesman said: “We would always encourage residents with safety concerns to contact their local Essex County Councillor, who can then raise them with the Maldon Local Highways Panel.”

Last January the Standard revealed more ambulances were sent to car crashes in the Dengie than anywhere else in the Maldon district between November 2014 and 2015.

Last year speed checks were carried out on the Dengie following a fatal crash at Southminster in April and a serious motorcycle crash in Bradwell-on-Sea in May.
