MALDON'S new Lidl store opened to the public last week.
The German discount chain, which began work on the site at Station Road earlier this year, opened at 8am on Thursday last week by Maldon District Council Chairman Peter Elliott and Maldon mayor Richard Miller.
Councillors gave the 1,391 sq m store the green light in September, and it is understood it will create 20 full time and 20 part-time jobs.
The store shortly before it opened its doors to the public last Thursday.
The top-of-the-range store boasts an in-store bakery, longer tills with dual packing facilities, customer toilets and baby changing facilities.
There is parking for both cars and bicycles as well as electric car charging points.
As part of its first week of trading, Lidl will be offering 50 per cent off selected fruit and vegetables and up to £20 off some non-food items including a mixer and vacuum cleaner.
Lidl will offer groceries, household products, a limited provision of chilled or frozen food, a small range of fresh produce and fresh bread.
