HUNDREDS of people turned out to mark Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome’s 100th anniversary.

The centenary celebrations took place last weekend at the World War One airfield in Purleigh.

The aerodrome, which was built in 1916, played host to its largest flying event of the year, with aircraft coming from across the country to take part.

Ian Flint, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome CEO, said: “It was great to see so many new faces here, alongside out long term supporters.

“We love putting on these events, and this one was so special we’re glad that iw as such an amazing success.

“It’s been a very hard working year for the team of trustees, volunteers and staff, and to see the event season close on such a high is a great reward.”

As well as flying displays from BE2 aircraft, Stampe Trio, The Tiger Club Turbulent Team, and the highly valued Sopwith Snipe, there was plenty to do on the ground.

Great War interpreters told stories of what life would have been like, birds of prey were on display, there were local stalls, and a musical performance from singer Marie Lloyd.

Stow Maries is open to the public from 10am to 5pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
