A MAN will be sentenced next month after admitting killing his mother.

Javid Ahmed, 26, of Fambridge Close, Maldon, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court this morning.

He denied murdering his mother Amina Begum, 47, on March 24, but admitted one count of manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

Amina was found lying in the street in Fambridge Close earlier this year with multiple injuries.

She later died as a result of her injuries.

Expert psychologists assessed Ahmed and recommended he be allowed to rely on the partial defence due to his impaired mental functions.

The Crown Prosecution Service accepted the plea and will not proceed with a murder trial.

Richard Kelly, prosecuting, said: "As a result of two expert reports on the issue of diminished responsibility, both of which conclude the defence of diminished responsibility is established, the crown has considered the case.

"Given the reports, the facts of the case, and after engagement with the family as well, in all the circumstances we believe it is appropriate to accept the plea."

Ahmed will be sentenced on September 19.

The nature of his mental impairment was not revealed to the court today but the extent of any medical conditions will be revealed during the sentencing hearing.

On that date Judge Charles Gratwicke QC will have to decide whether Ahmed is sent to a secure hospital for treatment, to prison or a combination of the two, and for how long.

On March 26, at about 2pm, police were called to Fambridge Close following reports of a disturbance.

They arrived to find Ms Begum with significant injuries.

Paramedics tried to save her but were unable to do so.

  • Flower tributes were left to Amina Begum

A post mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple incised wounds.

Her family described her as a "lovely and gentle" woman.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Danny Stoten, said after the hearing: "Amina Begum was subjected to a very violent attack, during which she suffered 37 knife wounds.

"Despite efforts by police officers and ambulance staff at the scene, she could not be saved.

"Javid Ahmed was promptly arrested at the family home and he admitted to killing his mother.

"The investigation into this incident has established that at the time Ahmed was very unwell and his mental capacity was significantly impaired.

"For this reason the Crown Prosecution Service has accepted a plea of manslaughter, which is appropriate in these circumstances.

"Members of the public tried to intervene to help Mrs Begum and I would like to thank them for their bravery during what must have been a very frightening incident."
