PUPILS at Marylandsea Primary School have been planting vegetables as part of the National Healthy Schools Programme.

A team of pupils, led by teacher, Anne Moody, have been tending to the school allotments.

They have planted a range of fruits and vegetables that will be harvested in September and used in their school meals.

The idea behind the plan is to educate the children where their food comes from.

Anne explained: “We decided, as a school, that we would like to explore the opportunity of growing our own fruit and vegetables.

“It means the children can understand where it all comes from.

“It helps to develop a really healthy attitude towards food.

“We have a school cook in place who is cooking healthy meals for the children and the idea is that when we harvest everything in September we will take that food into the kitchens and us it for our school meals.

“It will help them have that awareness of where the food is coming from.

“We can establish all those healthy habits early on.”
