A VOLUNTEER group from Southminster has been recognised for its commitment to the community at a countywide awards ceremony.

The Dengie Project Trust was recognised at the second annual Who Will Care Awards organised by Essex County Council.

The awards recognise unsung heroes from across Essex who make a difference in their community.

In total there were seven winners of awards on the night.

The Dengie Project Trust won the Voluntary and Community Service Award for their group which offers a range of community services in Mid-Essex including transport, intergenerational activities, support for carers and liaison with health and social care services.

John Aldridge, Chairman of the Council, said: “I was delighted to attend the Who Will Care? Awards and meet the volunteers. I have been inspired by the many incredible nominations we received.

“This is a tribute to the range and depth of volunteering in our communities across Essex and I thank all the nominees for their hard work for the community.”

Dick Madden, Cabinet Member for Adults and Children, added: “It is wonderful to see volunteers of all walks of life being recognised by the people they inspired, who were there to cheer them on in force.

“The direct impact these volunteers have on the lives of those they help, especially those in challenging circumstances is clear, and in many cases, life changing.”

Last year The Dengie Project Trust received a £7,200 grant from the Gannett Foundation, owners of the Standard, to build a shower room at the Kingswood Day Centre in Southminster.
