FUNDRAISERS out their best foot forward as they took part in an annual walking event at the weekend.

Hundreds of walkers pounded the pavements between Heybridge and Chelmsford for Farleigh Hospice’s annual Walk for Life.

Now in its 24th year those taking part chose between a 24km route from Heybridge Basin or a 12km route from Paper Mill Lock.

Both routes finished in Chelmsford having taken walkers along the peaceful towpaths of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.

More than 700 people had signed up to take part in the event ahead of the day.

Last year walkers raised £73,000 in sponsorship money and Farleigh Hospice are hoping the total this year will be even bigger.

Dominique Brunning, Events Manager, said: “Many people were walking in memory of loved ones; it’s a very humbling day to be part of.

"Others were simply keen to enjoy the beautiful Essex countryside whilst helping local people affected by life limiting illness - we are so glad the rain held off! Huge thanks go to our sponsors M&G Investments, e2v Technologies for generously donating the use of their site, and the volunteers, staff and local companies that helped the day run smoothly.”

The money raised from the day helps Farleigh Hospice provide doctors, nurses, therapists and counsellors to people across mid Essex in their time of greatest need.

Just £20 can help fund a craft session for five patients, £40 can help fund a massage therapy session for a patient and £110 can fund a visit from a clinical nurse specialist.
