MALDON’S mayor has handed out more than 200 commemorative medals to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Year six pupils at five primary schools in Maldon were given the medals by Mark Heard on Friday.

All Saints Primary School, Maldon Court School, Wentworth School, Maldon Primary School and St Francis School were the five school chosen.

Mr Heard said: “This is part of an initiative by the mayor of Burnham Ron Pratt and District Chairman Peter Elliott and I thought it was a lovely idea and wanted to be involved so I agreed to fund this locally.

“I would have liked to present each child with such a medal but with a total of over 1700 children it went beyond the mayors’ allowance, so I had to limit it to all year six students.”

Mr Heard was one of thousands who turned out in Windsor last Thursday to celebrate the event.

He added: “It was a brilliant day and was quite an emotional experience.”
