GEOGRAPHY students travelled to Sicily to put their skills in to practice during the Easter holidays.

The 15 pupils from Ormiston Rivers Academy took in the Italian island on the tip which saw them visit Mount Etna and trek to the top of the Alcantara Gorge.

The trip to Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, included a cable car ride, 4x4 truck journey and an adrenaline filled hike up the slopes to the crater rim.

Pupils also got to see the ruins of the Greek Theatre at Taormina and enjoy a boat trip to the Aeolian island of Stromboli.

There was event an opportunity for pizza making and a chance to pick up some souvenirs.

Head of Humanities, Louise Judge, said: “Every year the students I take on the international geography trip surprise me with their reliance, teamwork, attitude and love of geography.

“This year the compliments we received while traveling through Sicily were numerous.”

Year 10 student, Amelia Richardson added: “My favourite part of the trip was the gorge. The way it formed was so interesting as well. I learnt that the lava flow was cooled by the air and water, which slowed it down and formed different shapes.”
