A Maldon doctor has told of his charity’s efforts to “restore humanity” to desperate migrants in Calais.
Leigh Daynes, visited the “New Jungle” last week – a miserable makeshift camp in Calais where up to 4,000 migrants from war-torn countries, including Syria, Afghanistan and Sudan temporarily call home.
Mr Daynes, executive director of Doctors of the World UK, has led efforts to offer physical and emotional medical support to patients suffering from gangrene, breathing difficulties and severe cases of diarrhoea.
He said: “The needs are similar to that of after a natural disaster, certainly on the medical side people are presenting not just with medical symptoms, but also emotional distress."
The clinic only has funds to run until the middle of next month.
He said: “The best way to help is to donate to our Calais appeal.
“The cost per month is about £17,000 enabling us to treat 1,400 people a month.”
