A new £150,000 project aimed at treating people before they need to go to hospital has been criticised.

The Mid Essex Living Safe and Well project, supported by NHS providers and Essex County Council, aims to tackle obesity, frailty, alcoholism and domestic abuse as early as possible.

However, members of Maldon District Council's community services committee said the money, believed to come from Essex County Council, would be better deployed elsewhere.

They also criticised the new onus on encouraging cash-strapped housing associations, librarians, health visitors and other groups or individuals working with residents to "make every contact count".
