An unsung hero has been recognised for his kindness and effort to always help others.

Retired sweet shop owner Graham Smith, of Spital Road, has been given a Services to the Community Award by the mayor of Maldon, Stephen Nunn.

Mr Smith was nominated by Bert Patient, of Park Drive, Maldon, for his dedication to Maldon pensioners and the disabled.

Mr Patient said: “Graham spends much of his time caring about others and if it was not for him, many of Maldon’s older residents would never be able to get out.

“He arranges trips to shows and places of interest and takes people to the shops and for appointments.

“He does all this with a cheery word and a smile.”

Mr Smith is a well-known figure in the town, having taken over the running of his parents’ sweet shop in the High Street for many years.
