More jobless people are claiming benefits in the Maldon district, according to the latest monthly figures.
In February, 450 made claims compared to 421 in January.
Jobcentre manager Dave Cope said: “We wouldn’t necessarily expect to see an increase at this time of year.
“Historically, Maldon’s figures are still around the level of summer 2008 so that’s optimistic.
“I think the drive for Maldon is very much Chelmsford.
“Chelmsford is very economically bouyant at the moment and John Lewis will create a lot of job opportunities.
“Maldon does have a pretty good labour market.
“There’s a lot more in Maldon than people realise.”
