County Hall chiefs have ruled out setting aside money to pay for a full roll out of LED street lights.
Essex County Council announced a LED streetlight pilot across the county, costing £1million, sparking hopes lights could be turned back on if highways bosses are convinced of the environmental and financial savings.
Maldon and Burnham are included in the pilot scheme.
But now it has emerged no money has been set aside to pay for an extension even if the findings are positive.
In a motion which went to a full council meeting, Stephen Robinson, leader of the Liberal Democrats group at County Hall, called on the council to bid for a share of £3.8billion set aside the Green Investment Bank, but it was rejected.
