Existing stallholders have voiced their anger at not being consulted over a proposed High Street market.

Traders of the current Thursday and Saturday Butt Lane market said they had not been contacted by Maldon District Council over its plans to bring a market to the upper end of the High Street.

John Pocock, who sells household wares, said: “There’s about nine market stalls here on a Thursday.

“They should have consulted with us first.

“We have been here longer and have been trying to get into the High Street for 25 years.”

Plant stallholder Andy Baxter, 61, added: “No-one has consulted us.

“I would prefer to be in the High Street because obviously you’re more visible.

A council spokesman said discussions had taken place with the Butt Lane market operator and hoped traders would want to be part of the High Street market.
