Firefighters were able to successfully tackle a fire after a quick-thinking control officer traced an abandoned emergency call.
A man had dialled 999 just before 12noon today after a fire broke out in his home in Creeksea Lane, Burnham, but, after raising the alarm, he left the phone hanging while he tried to tackle the flames.
The control officer on the other end of the line heard the man choking in the smoke and the sound of an alarm so sent firefighters straight to the sceneafter tracking the address.
Fire minutes later the man called back to confirm there was a fire and where he lived.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle the fire, which was extinguished by 12.20pm, and used a high pressure fan to clear the smoke from the building.
The man, who was suffering from the affects of breathing in smoke, was left in the care of the ambulance service.
