A controversial proposal to change a house directly in front of a retirement home into a funeral directors has been recommended for approval when it reaches the Central Area Planning Committee next Wednesday.

The application was first submitted on June 25 and has attracted 41 letters of objection, including from residents of Baker Mews retirement home and neighbouring Italian restaurant Il Camino.

The objections claim the location of the funeral home is 'distasteful and insensitive' and residential parking would be obstructed by customers and hearses.

Maldon Town Council opposed the plans but the report to the committee concluded the new business would strengthen the town centre and provide economic development and employment.

The decision will be made at the Central Area Planning Committee, Maldon District Council offices, next Wednesday evening.
