Police are reminding the public of the importance of securing their cars at all times.

Sergeant Paul Austin said: “We are continuing to see a small increase in theft of vehicles overnight particularly Land Rovers and 4x4 vehicles off driveways in the Maldon district.

“Don’t leave your Land Rover unattended away from your house or business for any length of time, choose car parks which are well lit and where there is CCTV.

“Where possible park your vehicle overnight in your garage.

“Fit an alarm or immobiliser and a tracker if possible, the alarm may not be so effective in a remote location but the immobiliser should prevent criminals ‘hotwiring’ the vehicle and the tracker will help locate the vehicle if stolen.

“Block your vehicle in with other parked cars.

“Consider purchasing a steering wheel lock or wheel clamps.

“Ensure keys are not left in the vehicle or somewhere where a thief will easily find them, such as a hook on the wall or a hall table.

“Report any suspicious persons or incidents to the police on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.

“Consider security marking your vehicle.

“Should individual parts be stolen this will assist in identifying any recovered property.”
