An aerodrome used during the First World War will commemorate a century since the war began by turning their lights out.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Hackmans Lane, Purleigh, are holding an evening of poetry, music and speeches next Monday.

Lights will go out to mark the centenary of war breaking out.

Aerodrome manager, Russell Savory, said: “All are welcome to attend this event which will be held in the Mess Hall of the aerodrome where men would have spent their evenings.

“We have pianolas of the period which will be playing the popular tunes of the day, which is just what these chaps would have listened to in the evenings.

“Stow Maries is the most complete, surviving First World War aerodrome and it’s purpose was to house the pilots and planes that protected London from the bombing raids.

“It could be a very moving evening.

“We would particularly be pleased to have the descendants here of any of the personnel who were based at the aerodrome, from the ladies who kept the airmen fed to the airmen who flew out of the base.”

The event starts at 8.30pm.
