Essex County Council rejects 98.5% of pothole damage claims

Hundreds of motorists were left out of pocket after Essex County Council rejected 98.5% of all pothole damage claims between December and the end of May this year.

Drivers made 669 claims for pothole damage to vehicles but the council only paid out for ten of them.

Leader of the County Labour Group, councillor Julie Young, said: “This is the biggest area of concern for Essex residents and the biggest issue in my postbag.

“Motorists are facing costly repairs and worse still cyclists and pedestrians are suffering physical injuries.”

The claims took an average of 50 days to resolve and cost the council £4,000 in total, with 853 cases yet to be decided.

Good. People don't own the roads; they make a choice to do it. Life is a risk. Slow down if the road has potholes... Or don't drive but catch a bus if you don't like the road!

Too many people try to get too much of taxpayer money!

Er, Jack - I'm sorry to contradict you but the people DO own the roads! Who do you think are the tax payers? Your comment was obviously made without thinking.

Therefore, it IS incumbent upon the councils to fix the roads since they are OUR roads paid for with OUR monies. Someone needs to sue the councils for recompense. But, being British and all that, we wouldn't want to cause a fuss, now would we? Heaven forbid ...

(Awaiting all the thumbs down with bated breath! LOL)

We know money is tight, so ECC Highways should prioritise the worst potholes.

This pothole in Church Street is clearly dangerous, not just because of its size but because it is on a narrow section of the road where oncoming traffic makes it difficult to avoid. For cyclists it is very dangerous.

ECC were told about this pothole by myself and a Witham Town councillor several times over a period of 6 months, as published in the BWT letters page. There have also been on-line reports from residents.

Earlier this year ECC did patching work in Rickstones Road and Cressing Road, not that far away. Surely they could have done the Church Street one then. There are others in Church Street that need doing but this one was a stand-out must do pothole. Even a temporary repair to make it safe would have helped. But they failed to do anything other than spray coloured paint around it. Woeful.
