Maldon District Council hopes to spend more than £50,000 in Burnham and the Dengie to boost tourism and trade.
The council has applied for the grant, which will be spent purely on the Dengie communities, to mitigate the loss of jobs from Bradwell Power Station, which is currently undergoing decommissioning.
It is hoped that the grant from the Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) will be used to encourage short stay visitors and promote Burnham as an access point to Wallasea Island.
Local traders and businesspeople welcomed the plans.
Fiona Clegg, who organises Burnham’s Festive Fayre and the town’s Quay Day, said tourism would be Burnham’s “only salvation” once the nuclear power plant cuts the majority of employment next year.
