An historical monument marking the resting place of Maldonian ancestors has been demolished due to health and safety risks.

Maldon Town Council has instructed that the elaborate chest tomb, based in St Peter’s churchyard on the corner of Market Hill and the High Street, be dismantled because the undeground vault is collapsing.

The monument dedicated to the Shears family has been taken down as it could have fallen into the void beneath.

Town clerk Theresa Byles said: “We are having to slowly fill the vault with ballast.

“Eventually when we get the money to rebuild it, that will happen but there are no plans in place just yet."
