Britain's first gay dads to marry when law changes on Saturday

Maldon and Burnham Standard: Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow at their civil partnership in 2006 Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow at their civil partnership in 2006

Britain’s first gay dads are to marry on Saturday, when the law changes to allow gay couples to officially marry.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow, will marry at Greenwoods Hotel and Spa in Stock.

The Danbury couple, who run the British Surrogacy Centre in Chandlers Quay, Maldon, previously told the Standard they had invited Elton John and singer Ricky Martin.

The Drewitt-Barlows, who have been together for 27 years, entered a civil partnership in 2006.

Tony said: “It’s really uplifting to know that we are making progress in our campaign for equal rights. I consider this to be a massive leap."

There main objective for this is no doubt to get into the papers once again - easy as The Burnham & Maldon just love to follow the exploits of these two.

At least this should cost the community less than we drove their range rover into a flood just to get rescued and some publicity.

They are nothing but an embarassment to our region and I wish dearly they would keep their lives to themselves or live somewhere else.

L2097 that's not very nice, obviously you don't know The two lovely gentlemen in person, because if you did, then you would realise, this has been done to enable people whom are extremely In love, like themselves who have been together for 27yrs. To be married, their relationship has lasted longer than, a lot of heterosexual couples that have married and are now divorced. They have a beautiful family, and the children are a credit to them both. Sounds like you maybe jealous, and if u don't like the fact they live near you, then why don't you move........Barry and Tony, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you good luck on your wedding day, and wish you and your family, much love, health and happiness x

The publicity they get is working for the good of others, not themselves. They have,by living authentically, laid the foundations for 'building families' which encompasses and respects all growing families within our society.I have massive respect for the example they have set.Great that they should be the first to get married. They were the first for a lot of things.Have a great day to all your family.

I have no objections to "Barrie and Tony" as to how they wish to spend their life - their sexualities does not interest me whatsoever. Additionally I have made no comment suggesting that they are bad parents - I wouldn't know.

What I find irritating is that these two people constantly seek every opportunity to gain publicity; they do not seem content just with each other atall. The Maldon and Burnham give them far too much press.

When they got their Range Rover stuck in the Ford they showed a total disresepct of the cost of that to the tax payer. All they could do was make stereotypical gay & camp comments about it ruining their expensive shoes. They just play on the whole gay thing far too much and cause many of us to dislike them precisely for that - not because they're gay but because they are a pair of drama queens.

Every single article concerning these gentlemen includes mention of their business, this time as follows...
"The Danbury couple, who run the British Surrogacy Centre in Chandlers Quay, Maldon, previously told the Standard they had invited Elton John and singer Ricky Martin."

The M&B may not be aware of the UK surrogacy law: advertising offences.

It is a criminal offence in the UK to advertise that you are:
•Looking for a surrogate mother
•Willing to act as a surrogate mother
•A third party willing to facilitate the making of a surrogacy arrangement (although this last offence does not apply to non profit making organisations).

The law catches adverts online worldwide as well as in print, if they are placed by someone in the UK and can be viewed in the UK. They also catch the publishers of adverts in the UK.

Call me a cynic if you must, but it appears to me that these gentlemen are using their 'private' activities to subtly promote their surrogacy business.
Why else would every article concerning them need to mention surrogacy?

treInc. Thank you for responding to my comment and the irony is not lost that you do so using your business name. But you appeared to have overlooked my final comment...
Why else would every article concerning you and your partner need to mention surrogacy?

Yes, I'm well aware that your business is based in LA. I believe both you and your partner have signed undertakings here in the UK, disqualifying both of you from being company directors for eight years from 2010, following an investigation by the Insolvency Service. Although that alone would not be reason for running your business in the USA, as I also understand US surrogacy laws are more accommodating, than here in the UK.

I have to tell you that I won’t be throwing my TV out of the window...Apart from any other reason, I don't have SKY. lol

I would like to state here and now that I am not a hater, my philosophy is 'live and let live'. Finally I must respond to you thanking me for my concern. I’m sorry but I am not concerned for you, I don't know either of you, or harbour any feelings, negative or positive. I merely question the constant mention of your surrogacy business in the Maldon & Burnham articles about you.

@paultheuver1. You seem unimpressed about the surrogacy issues, can I ask why this is??
Do u not think its a good idea to help those poor parents, that have longed for kiddies, that will be loved and treasured more than anything? I myself was adopted many years ago, and couldn't wish for better parents than I ended up having, unfortunately my brother and sister weren't so lucky.....my question to you is do you think it's bad to help someone who is desperate to have the one thing they cannot then? Surely by advertising, so many more people get to have their dreams? WHY DO YOU FEEL this is wrong? Or is it that you have a simple hatred for the people in question, that's why you leave
negative comments about them so often?

I’m sorry but I don't know why you thought that I seem unimpressed about the surrogacy issues. I believe that if you read my comments again, you will find I was asking why the need to mention their surrogacy centre in every article about them.

At no point had I commented on the issue of surrogacy.
But in the interest of clarity, I will now. I have absolutely no issue with surrogacy per se, as a parent I would not wish to deprive anyone the joy of parenthood. Although since commenting on this article, I have found a couple of surrogacy websites and notice they seem to be targeting professionals, which I assume means those with the ability to pay. I can't say that I agree with that, surely I can’t be alone in thinking that everyone should have access to this service, not just those who can afford it.
So for the record, I fully support non-profit voluntary surrogacy services for all, but do question if it’s ethical to run surrogacy services for profit.

You mention that you were adopted, but your brother and sister were not so lucky. It’s such a shame that even in this day and age; there are still so many children without parents, like those that adopted you.

Now regarding your comment about the advertising of surrogacy, advertising is rarely free, so has to be paid for somehow, invariably by the customer. So I have to question whether for-profit surrogacy would allow as many people to have their dreams as you infer or believe. With that in mind, maybe such advertising is wrong, although I honestly hadn’t considered this before, contrary to your assertion.
Anyway it doesn’t matter whether you or I think it is right or wrong, that's irrelevant as it is illegal here in the UK.
Also, the ASA state that if an article contains an advertisement, it needs to state this; it should not masquerade as news.

Finally I find your last observation really offensive, I cannot see anything I have written would lead anyone to ask this… “Or is it that you have a simple hatred for the people in question, that's why you leave negative comments about them so often?”
You appear to hold the Drewitt-Barlow’s in high regard, maybe this is why you take such a stance towards anyone that dares to comment on them.
I have definitely NOT made a personal issue of surrogacy or the Drewitt-Barlows. Anything I have commented in earlier posts is supported by facts, not supposition, unlike the comments concerning me.
If you or anybody doubts me, I am more than willing to attempt to prove my integrity.

They are two hard working people, who have the most wonderful family and beautiful children, whom are a credit to them. I actually live in the same village, and have for years even before they were in the public eye, they were always polite to local people, and very charitable. It just annoys me why people have so much hatred for people that put themselves out to help others, as well as working and raising a family. I don't like to see hard working family people being ridiculed, for helping others.
