Fed-up commuters are being promised only “modest” improvements to trains, despite the service being ranked joint worst in the country.

Greater Anglia came joint bottom alongside Southeastern in a Which? customer satisfaction survey, scoring just 40 per cent.

The operator, which took charge of train services in February 2012, was only awarded a short-term franchise until 2016.

Rail users are now demanding that the route, which serves five stations in Maldon district, should see significant improvements.

Rupert Baker, 40, who commutes daily from South Woodham Ferrers to London for his work in an engineering company, said the service was “disappointing”.

He said: “Greater Anglia just can’t deal with disruption."
