Public sports facilities could be based at a Burnham school.

Maldon District Council officers have met with Joan Costello, headteacher of Ormiston Rivers Academy, to discuss the future of leisure services in the town.

The council are considering a joint premises partnership with the school, which could allow sports equipment to based on site for residents to use during the day.

If the council proceeds with this option, sports facilities will no longer exist at the Dengie Hundred Sports Centre, in Millfields, Burnham, and it may close.

The Blackwater Leisure Centre in Maldon would be refurbished.

In a letter to the council, Ms Costello said that governers were keen to pursue the agreement as long as the school had use of the main facilities during school opening hours.

Speaking to The Standard, Ms Costello said: “I am quite open to have sports facilities at Ormiston Rivers Academy.

“We have some excellent facilities here, which would be practical to be used by everyone."
