Drivers could face a 10p increase to park in Maldon, making prices comparable with fees charged in Chelmsford.

Maldon District Council's community services committee has recommended the hourly rate increase to £1 and all other price bands rise by 10p, generating an extra £48,420 a year from car parks in White Horse Lane, Butt Lane, High Street East and Friary Fields.

Council officers had suggested a 10p rise on all bands only, which would have generated an extra £36,415 a year.

The council currently makes £553,863 a year. Charges were last increased in 2011.

If the changes are agreed, all-day parking at White Horse Lane, the most expensive car park, would cost £8.10 and £4.10 in the others.

Chelmsford City Council has four car parks charging £4.50 for more than three hours and one charging £4.
