An Olympic sailor is among three district residents to be named in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list.

Grandfather-of-six Keith Musto, who won the only silver medal for the UK in the Flying Dutchman class in the 1964 Summer Olympics, is set to receive an OBE for services to economy.

After the Olympics, the 77-year-old, who lives in Burnham’s High Street with his wife Gillian, set up a sailmaking business before concentrating solely on sailing and outdoor clothing.

His company Musto Clothing has since gained royal attention from Zara Phillips who launched an equestrian clothing range with the firm.

Mr Musto, who carried the Olympic Torch through Colchester, said: “I was just one of a team that has enjoyed some opportunities that have come good.

“We started making clothing because we got fed up with getting cold and wet and we thought something better could be done.

“In the old days you just wore your old clothes and old flannel trousers, there were no real water proofs.

“If we realised what we had to learn in the first five years I don’t think we would have started.”

Alongside Mr Musto, Nick Back from Purleigh and David Lodge from Heybridge are due to receive MBE’s.
