Would-be shoplifter tricks Morrisons' staff into letting him leave

Maldon and Burnham Standard: Morrisons in Maldon Morrisons in Maldon

A man who attempted to steal food from a Maldon supermarket tricked security staff into letting him get away.

The man left Morrisons, in Limebrook Way, just after noon on December 13 with a full trolley, which he had not paid for.

When he was challenged, the items inside the trolley were recovered.

It is believed that while he was escorted back to the store he was allowed to go back to a black Citroen.

He then drove off.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “Police are making enquiries to track the man responsible, who is described as being aged in his 40s, 6ft tall, white and wearing jeans and a t-shirt.”

A Morrisons spokesperson said:  “We have a zero tolerance approach to theft.

"Shoplifting often involves the threat of or actual violence towards colleagues and is not a victimless crime as many think.

"Our store security colleagues work closely with the police to identify and catch anyone attempting to take goods without paying.”

Meanwhile Maldon Police are still 'considering' whether to step up patrols in the area following a spate of purse thefts and other such activities which have blighted this store.

It's high time that Morrison's invested in some CCTV and dedicated security staff.

I agree. The security there seems to be the most inept bunch I have ever heard of. How many customers have been conned just outside their doors now? And now they just let a thief go wandering back to their car? If it wasn't for the poor pensioners getting robbed I'd say that Morrisons deserve all they get.

And nobody noted the vehicle registration number?

Up here in Planet Zog, if you don't input your VRN into a parking fee machine on arrival at Morrisons they have you banged to rights from the very start.

But the security staff and management are equally useless. Recently, notwithstanding a customer (inside the store) screaming and shouting for help when she discovered a pervert trying to photograph up the inside of her dress, they refused her plea to call the police and allowed the miscreant to leave the store.

When we retrospectively reported the matter to the police they remarked on how different it would have been if it was case of suspected shoplifting!
